Fashion brands, producers and retailers in key consumer markets across Europe and North America are fighting for survival. Stores are closed, sales have slumped, inventories are mounting, staff are being laid off or furloughed, executives are taking pay cuts, dividends have been suspended, and companies are taking steps to shore up their liquidity. For many, the response has also been to abandon or scale-back orders, and delay – or even cancel – payments to vendors. The knock-on consequences are factory closures and the dismissal of millions of workers in some of the poorest countries in the world.

Bulgaria was one of Europe’s fastest growing apparel producers in 2006. However, most of the textile and apparel sector is in need of investment. There are a handful of modern manufacturers, many of whom are owned by foreign companies. But the vast majority of companies are small to medium sized enterprises which are already operating at full capacity. These firms face a number of obstacles to growth, most notably a lack of added value and a limited supply of short-term finance. Now that Bulgaria is a member of the EU, the industry faces a number of opportunities for development, spurred by: easier access to the EU, its largest export market; harmonised legislation with the EU; improved opportunities for training and networking; a fixed exchange rate against the euro; reductions in the grey economy, in working practices and in corruption; better availability of short-term finance for capacity expansion and modernisation of technology; improved attractiveness to potential investors; an increase in the number of jobs; and higher labour productivity.
International recognition for "Victoria Unikat"
Fashion house "Viktoria Unikat", producer of men's neckties, with designer Rositsa Parashkevova, was awarded with an authoritative international prize. The company from Varna is honoured with the International Trade Prestige award 2001. The decision was taken by the votes of 15 000 members of the Trade Leaders club from 122 countries. The award would be received personally by the owners of "Victoria Unikat" in Madrid during the second half of December this year.
