AKIKOAOKI presented collection Autumn-Winter 2023/2024 at Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo
On 16th March I attended the fashion show of AKIKOAOKI brand at Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo.
After graduating from Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo, Akiko continued her studies at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. Following this, Akiko returned to Tokyo and worked as a design assistant before launching her own label during Tokyo Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015.
Driven by the philosophy that fashion is a posture, a performance, and a living act, AKIKOAOKI seeks to create a novel and nostalgic world of fashion by drawing out the fantasy that hides beneath the surface of everyday life. Through deconstruction and reassembly of the essence of womenswear, AKIKOAOKI offers a vision that is not only classic and delicate but also unique, subversive and individual. Shortlisted as one of the semifinalists in the 2018 edition of the LVMH Young Fashion Designers Prize, held an exhibition in Paris shortly after.
In the same year, Akikoaoki won the Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix Shiseido Sponsorship Award for Best New Designer. In the same month, she received the "Rising Star of the Year" award presented by VOGUE JAPAN to support the new generation of women active in the fashion scene in Japan and abroad. She was selected as a winner of Fashion Asia Hong Kong in December and presented at the Hong Kong Design Center.
In February 2019, she was selected for a program sponsored by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) to exhibit at the Tomorrow Showroom in Paris.
